The project was to develop a truly “Big Data” web application that involves collecting information from a large number of fish culture operations. Piscimetrix™ is a secure online performance benchmarking system that seeks to improve the performance and profitability of aquaculture producers by allowing them to confidentially compare their data with other producers in the sector.

ChromeMedia Inc. was approached by a Veridis Aquatic Technologies, a company wanting to offer novel services the aquaculture industry.

The goal was to develop a truly “Big Data” web application that involved collecting information from a large number of fish culture operations.

Piscimetrix™ is a secure online performance benchmarking system that seeks to improve the performance and profitability of aquaculture producers by allowing them to confidentially compare their data with other producers in the sector.

The project was challenging as the web application incorporates a series of cutting-edge mathematical and nutritional models. As the application development partner on this project, we worked closely with scientific staff of the company to implement these mathematical models into a web based application.

We built this application from the ground up, and in doing so we were able to fully utilize our Lean Agile programming methodology. We worked closely with all stakeholders to create comprehensive user stories that ensured we had a quick and efficient build of the web application. We have been very proud of our work on this project, and look forward to being a part of its continued success.

The core of the application was built with the Zend Framework (the leading PHP Framework.) The user dashboard was built such that with an account, an aquaculture producer can upload spreadsheets that contain data from their farm (such as water temperature, feed levels etc.). This data is then stored securely in a cloud-based database. The user can then run various reports to compare their data with other producers in the aquaculture industry.
Generating these reports required us to take complex mathematical calculations, and build these calculations directly into the web application code base. In addition, the project required that the data from the mathematical models be displayed as various charts and graphs. To accommodate this feature request, we made heavy use of Javascript to render the required charts and graphs within a web browser.
